September to March. The monsoon has passed, the hills are still green, and the skies are clear enough for the summit views. June to August is the waterfall season, but trails turn slippery and leech-heavy, and some forest routes close.
Two nights covers the town-side cluster — Mullayanagiri, Baba Budangiri, Jhari Falls and Hirekolale Lake. Three or four lets you add the Kemmangundi day (Hebbe Falls, Kallathgiri, Z Point) and the Sringeri–Horanadu–Kalasa temple circuit, each of which is a full day of driving on its own.
Effectively, yes. The sights are spread across the district and public transport does not reach most of them. Self-drive cars and two-wheelers rent in town, and chauffeur-driven full-day sightseeing is widely available. A few places — Hebbe Falls above all — are reachable only by a shared forest jeep booked on the spot.
Hebbe and Jhari hold reasonable flow into October. Kallathgiri thins out, but the Veerabhadra temple beside it is worth the drive year-round. Honnammana Halla is genuinely monsoon-only — July to September, or not at all.
Anything inside Kudremukh National Park does — Kudremukh Peak and Nethravati Peak both require a forest permit and a mandatory guide, with photo ID for every trekker. Mullayanagiri, Z Point, Ettina Bhuja and Devaramane Betta do not.
Base yourself near town if you want short mornings to Mullayanagiri, Baba Budangiri and the lake. Stay on the Mudigere side if your trip is built around the Charmadi ghat, Devaramane Betta or the Ettina Bhuja trailhead — the drive between the two ends of the district eats a good part of a day.
