Chikmagalur

Coffee country, the highest peak in Karnataka, and more waterfalls than one trip holds

Where to start

Five ways to spend a weekend

Routes through the district rather than lists of it — each one built from the places further down this page.

The ridge road climbing towards Mullayanagiri

3 peaks · one road · a full day

The summit run

Mullayanagiri, Baba Budangiri and Z Point sit on one ridge road out of town. Drive it in a day, climb the last stretch to each on foot, and be back for dinner.

Hebbe Falls dropping through the Kemmangundi forest

5 falls · monsoon to January

Five waterfalls in one loop

Hebbe, Kallathgiri, Manikyadhara, Jhari and Honnammana Halla. Two need a forest jeep booked on the spot, and all five are at their best before the water drops in February.

The Sharada Peetha temple complex at Sringeri

3 towns · about 90 km

Temple towns of the Malnad

Sringeri, Horanadu and Kalasa, in that order, on one long day of driving — a Vijayanagara stone complex, a temple that feeds every visitor, and a river town most people pass straight through.

estate walks · tastings · a museum

Coffee country, up close

This is where coffee entered India, and the estates are still working farms rather than exhibits. Most of the homestays here will walk you through theirs.

The grassland ridge on the way up Ettina Bhuja

4 trails · 5 to 8 hours each

Treks that take the whole day

Ettina Bhuja, Kudremukh, Nethravati and Bandaje Arbi. Forest permits, an early start and a guide for at least two of them — these are not the roadside stops.

Before you go

Planning Chikmagalur

September to March. The monsoon has passed, the hills are still green, and the skies are clear enough for the summit views. June to August is the waterfall season, but trails turn slippery and leech-heavy, and some forest routes close.
